Speaker: Pastor Somkiat Kittipongse
Encouraging the defeated to fight on. (Acts 4: 36-37; 9: 26-28; 11:23-26; 13:2)
We receive encouragement from The Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is with us.
Barnabas is a good example of a person who encourages and supports others. Because there is Barnabas, we have Paul. Paul the Apostle will
not have developed and achieved his greatness without the support and belief that Barnabas has for him.
How did Barnabas encourage and support others?
Giving up and Sacrifice (Acts 4:34-37) Jerusalem was short of money, He sold his land to support his work for Jerusalem.
His work encourages others. Sacrifice is not only about the money but also the time. He dared to make decisions to sacrifice
Dares to believe a repented person (Acts 9:26-27). Saul had a very bad history persecution of Christians. People, like even
the other disciples did not trust Saul. We should learn to think out of the box like Barnabas. Look at the example of
David and Goliath. Goliath is a giant and a winning warrior. But David`s heart is with God. David trusts God and even after hearing
about Goliath, he was not afraid at all, and thinks the opposite of people who were afraid. David knows that even someone like
Goliath cannot win God!
Encourages people to do good. ( Acts 11: 22-23) Many Jews do not announce and spread the gospel to the Gentiles, as it will
involve many steps for them to become converts, such as circumcision. Barnabas knows that in future it may not be necessary
for believers to be circumcised. Barnabas can think out of the box as he has a positive outlook for the future. Note that when praising someone,
praise them for what they do, and not over and above what they had done.
Looks for person who is lost ( Acts 11:25) Barnabas knew he had more work to do. He had to bring Saul to Antioch. Barnabas
understands that people are persecuting Saul so he brought Saul away to hide from these people. If there is no Barnabas, there will
probably be no Paul.
They taught one year of the Bible in Antioch. The disciples there were called Christians. Paul was given the chance to teach
the Bible. Barnabas let him try out and in turn encouraged him and giving him the power. For the first missionary trip for Saul,
Barnabas was the facilitator. He was willing to be the supporting `actor`. Acts 13: 2,7,43. Initially Barnabas was the leader but during
the later part, Barnabas became supporting. allowing Paul to be in the lead.
To encourage people, we need to:
Have courage: Have positive thinking. People with negative thinking cannot encourage others. We need to have faith
and listen to God.
Ability to see the vision: Barnabas knows that Saul will become a good witness for God.
Wise Moves: Do thinks that give results
Select the right words: Be careful to use the right words at the right time the right person. Words used should be suitable.
